Contraceptive advice and prescription
The Minister of Health's regulation on midwives' permission to provide advice on contraception was approved in January 2021. The aim of the change is to increase access to contraception and thus promote better sexual health for people. Midwives at The Reykjavík Birth Center prescribe contraceptives and provide advice and are the first midwifery-led unit to offer women this service nationwide.
This service will be available as soon as midwives have made contracts with the Icelandic Health Insurance (Sjúkratryggingar Íslands) and will be for all healthy women, both before and after childbirth.
More information will come soon.
