How it came to be - and why?
Our dream was a birth center for women and their families, where they would receive continuous care from a wonderful midwife. Care that is empowering and care that is women-centered. We dreamt of a modern birth center that would fulfill all expectations of safety but also emphasize effective and open communication because childbearing should be an amazing experience for each family. A time when the family will receive support, their heart will expand and they can fulfill all their dreams and desires.
But we also wished this for all women - not only during pregnancy and birth but throughout the lifespan. That women would have an opportunity to be cared for and supported by a midwife before becoming pregnant, when they need contraception and even later in life during menopause. We are so happy to announce that our dream is coming to light, and the Reykjavik Birth Center is becoming a reality.
When we first met Edythe and Stefanía, we realized that they shared our vision and ideas of how we felt women and their families should be cared for - and quickly our team of four midwives was formed! For the past months we have developed our plans, found amazing partners and have received funding for the birth center. We will work towards creating a wonderful community for women and their families, where we will provide quality care, education and support that is personalized for each family. We hope to extend a special welcome to non-Icelandic speaking families and will offer all courses in both Icelandic and English. All of our midwives are happy to provide care to our families in English as well.
It is important to us to find a good home for our birth center. The birth center should be warm, inviting and lively. A place of caring that will encourage community for expecting and new parents. A community for all women. Our next project is therefore to find this perfect place for the Reykjavik Birth Center.
